Get ready for a season and an era unlike anything we’ve seen in college football.

An expanded 12-team College Football Playoff. Conference realignment that has created two super leagues, the SEC and the Big Ten. This should add major interest throughout the country and add more unforgettable games with postseason significance every Saturday.

The days of being burdened by a single defeat are over. Cinderella will finally have a place at the table.
The Post’s Zack Braziller prepares you for that with his preseason Top 25:

1. Georgia

Ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press preseason poll for the second consecutive year, the Bulldogs remain loaded. The Carson Beck-led offense should put up points and the defense, fueled by NFL Draft prospects at all three levels, will be on fire again. This will be a motivated group that saw its hopes of a three-peat dashed in a surprising SEC Championship Game loss to rival Alabama.

Expectations are always high in Columbus. But they’re even higher than usual after a stellar offseason that featured several key players opting to stay in school instead of going pro, and potentially difference-making transfers — like safety Caleb Downs (Alabama), quarterback Will Howard (Kansas State) and running backs Quinshawn Judkins (Ole Miss) – join the Buckeyes. Anything less than a championship would be a disappointment.

Dan Lanning has quickly established himself as one of the game’s brightest young coaches, winning 22 out of 27 games. They have a good mix of quality returners (three starters on the offensive line, star wideout Tej Johnson and defensive end Jordan Burch) and impact transfers (Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel, Texas A).

Results

The first game of the 2024 college football season also provided the first surprise.

Georgia Tech defeated No. 10 Florida State 24–21 in the opener in Ireland, winning on Aidan Bier’s 44-yard field goal as time expired.

The Yellow Jackets were 10.5-point underdogs coming into the game, but they didn’t play like it for a second and led for most of the game.

Haynes King led Georgia Tech into field goal range on the game-winning drive, before a devastating shotgun snap pushed the Yellow Jackets back to the FSU 38-yard line. But on third-and-long, he found Eric Singleton for an 11-yard gain and brought it back into field goal range for Byrne’s winning kick.

King completed 11 of 16 passes for 54 rushing yards as well as 146 passing yards. RB Jamaal Haynes rushed 11 times for 75 yards and two touchdowns.

Playing in his FSU debut, D.J. Uiagalelei was 19-for-27 with 193 passing yards and completed two clutch fourth-downs on drives that tied the game midway through the fourth quarter. But he would not see the field again as King and company wasted the final 6:33 minutes on their game-winning drive.

Saturday’s slate includes four games involving six FBS teams. Here’s what’s going on the rest of the day.

Live scoring

College football is back with a bang.

Georgia Tech kicker Aidan Birr made a game-winning field goal as time expired, helping the Yellow Jackets defeat the 10th-ranked Florida State Seminoles 24-21 at the Aer Lingus College Football Classic on Saturday in Dublin, Ireland.

Florida State quarterback DJ Uiagalelei led a 15-play, 84-yard drive that included two fourth down conversions to tie the game at 21. This would be the last time Florida State would have the ball.
Yellow Jackets quarterback Haynes King burned 6:33 minutes of game clock in 12 plays and gave his kicker a chance to win it.

Beers missed from 52 yards out on the first possession of the second half, but he fired the game-winner from 41 yards out just inside the left goalpost.
Florida State came out of the gate moving the ball over with ease on its opening drive. Lawrence Tofili scored his first touchdown of the 2024 season on a 28-yard run. The Seminoles executed a trick play on the extra point to secure the two-point conversion, giving them an 8–0 lead.

The Yellow Jackets responded with quick scores of their own. Backup quarterback Zach Pyrone sacked King on offense at the opposing one-yard line and entered the end zone for a touchdown on a QB draw.

King was a constant for the Yellow Jackets all day, getting the job done with both his hands and his feet. He finished the day 11 of 16 for 146 yards while running the ball 15 times for 54 yards.

Georgia Tech running back Jamaal Haynes carried the ball 11 times for 75 yards and scored two touchdowns in the victory.

Conferences

There was no right option. Someone worthy was about to be despised.

Either the College Football Playoff committee was going to give up on undefeated ACC champion Florida State, which was never looking the same after losing star quarterback Jordan Travis to a season-ending foot injury in the last week of November.

Or a one-loss Alabama was going to be eliminated after a stunning upset of defending one-time national champion and No. 1 Georgia. Some also believed that it was still necessary to attend if Georgia’s goal was to take the four best teams.
Those problems are now ancient history as the playoffs expanded to 12 teams this year, giving the sport a true postseason tournament for the first time.

For once, Cinderella will have a seat at the table – the highest-ranked conference champion from the Group of Five gets an automatic bid along with the winners of the Big Ten, SEC, ACC and Big 12. The other seven slots will be filled by larger teams. Adding to the anticipation, the first round of games will be played on campus.

Former Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh summarized the coming changes last December.
