Former Cincinnati Bearcat track and field athlete Annette Echikunwoke won a silver medal in the hammer throw for Team USA in Paris on Tuesday with a season-best throw of 75.48 meters.
The Nigerian dual national led the event after her third throw, but was eventually overtaken by Canada’s Camryn Rogers, who threw 76.97 meters for the gold medal. Echikunwoke became the first female hammer throw medalist for the United States. The 28-year-old was the top qualifier in the Olympic time trails and was joined by UC director of cross country/track & field Susan Seaton in Paris.
As a Bearcat, Echikunwoke won the weight throw at the NCAA Championships in 2017. She would have competed for her native Nigeria at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, but after a mix-up with the Athletic Federation of Nigeria, she moved to the United States and is now a silver medalist.
Echikunwoke is the school record holder in four of the five throwing events in which he competed as a Bearcat. She was a seven-time American Athletic Conference champion and a four-time All-America First Team honoree. She becomes UC’s first Olympic medalist since 2008 when Mary Weinberg won gold in the 4×400 relay in Beijing and David Payne won silver in the 110-meter hurdles.
He is a graduate of Pickerington North High School near Columbus.

Gabby Thomas made a revealing comment earlier this summer when she described what it would be like to arrive at the Olympics as a gold medal favorite.
Thomas, at 27 one of the leading ladies of American sprinting, said she cannot buckle under the weight of expectation if she hopes to be remembered as a legend of her sport.
“Great athletes are made under pressure,” Thomas said. “If I want to be a great athlete, if I want to be among the names like Sanya [Ross], Allyson [Felix], Carmelita [Jeter], Dawn [Harper-Nelson], I have to compete under pressure and do it.” Have to accept.” Part of it.”

Track and field events begin today at the Summer Games in Paris, and a Central Ohio native is ready to make her mark on the international stage.
U.S. hammer throw champion Annette Echikunwoke of Pickerington aims to bring home a gold medal for Team USA.
“That’s really where it all started for me,” Ichikunwoke shared. “First, Lakeview Junior High and then Pickerington North High School is where I really developed in the early stages of an athlete. That’s where I got better coaching and started to understand that I could actually do this after high school.”

On the way to Paris, he has overcome great disappointments.
In 2021, Ichikunwoke was set to compete for Nigeria in Tokyo, but her dreams were dashed when the country failed to properly conduct drug tests, resulting in Ichikunwoke being disqualified.
Now, she’s on Team USA, coming off wins at the trials and ready to prove herself on the Olympic stage.
Reflecting on her past disappointments with Nigeria, she said, “I just forgive them and wish them the best.” “I wish all the best to all the athletes. I still have friends competing for Nigeria, but I’m really excited to represent the United States. That’s what I’m there for. I give all the glory to God in this whole matter.”
Since arriving in Paris, Echikunwoke has been balancing her rigorous training schedule with the joy of experiencing the Olympic Village. She is meeting fellow Olympians and also celebrating her birthday in the city of lights.
Ichikunwoke is preparing for the hammer throw qualification on Sunday. He hopes to reach the final on Tuesday and win.
