It was an emotional Thursday night for three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray as the 37-year-old’s Wimbledon farewell began with a doubles defeat.

Murray will retire from the game this season and is playing for the last time at Wimbledon, a venue that has been home to some of the most memorable achievements of his career.

After a doubles loss to his brother Jamie on Thursday, Murray broke into tears after a small ceremony on Center Court in which a montage of his career was shown on a big screen.
“It’s hard because I would love to continue playing, but I can’t. Physically, it’s a lot harder now,” Murray said in his on-court interview after watching the video.

“I have always wanted to play, I love sports. It has given me so much, taught me so many lessons over the years that I can use for the rest of my life. I don’t want to stop, so it’s hard.

Grand Slam champions Novak Djokovic, Iga Swiatek, Martina Navratilova and John McEnroe were among some of the famous faces present at the brief ceremony, and they joined thousands of fans in giving Murray a standing ovation.

Murray’s family, including his two young daughters, watched from the stands.

“Mom and Dad were amazing at helping us follow our dreams when we were little… thank you, Mom and Dad,” Murray said, crying before speaking about his wife, Kim.

“She has been an amazing support to me, to my whole family, she is the best mother. Unfortunately, in a few months, he will have to see me every day […] I’m looking forward to the rest of our lives.

Murray will likely be back on Center Court on Saturday after signing up to play mixed doubles with fellow Briton Emma Raducanu.
A month later, Murray returned to the same court to win the gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

The victory marked the beginning of a successful year for Murray where he won the US Open – his first Grand Slam title.

After this he returned to Wimbledon in 2013 where he ended Britain’s 77-year wait.

Andy Murray has already been offered a new job ahead of his retirement after sharing his desire to get into coaching. The three-time Grand Slam champion was honored at a ceremony on Wimbledon’s Center Court on Thursday night after he and his brother Jamie lost their first-round doubles match.

The 37-year-old still has to play mixed doubles with Emma Raducanu at the Olympic Games before officially hanging up her racket.

But he can move into another role whenever he wishes, as Leon Smith has offered to resign his position so that Murray can take it.

The former world No. 1 was asked if fans would see Murray return to Center Court as a spectator in the coming years, when he explained his plans. He responded, “I’d probably be more comfortable in the coaching box there.”

Smith told the BBC, “He’s just been generous with his time, he’ll have more now and he can give more. Whatever he does in the future, he’ll obviously need time.”

“I like the fact he said he would rather be in the coaching box than anywhere else because he will be a wonderful asset to British players in whatever role he chooses.”
