Gymnast Simone Biles is returning to the Olympics and her husband Jonathan Owens will be able to watch her live on the biggest stage.
Biles qualified for the Paris Games with a win at the U.S. Olympic trials on Sunday. The star gymnast told Nancy Armor of USA TODAY that the Chicago Bears had given Owens permission to take time off during training camp to compete in the Olympics.
“The Bears are actually giving him a few days off from training camp, so he’ll be there,” Biles said. “Just for a little while.”
Biles and Owens have been together since 2020. The couple married last year and are building a home outside Houston. This is the first Olympics in which Owens can compete individually. During the 2021 Games in Tokyo, strict COVID-19 rules prevented participation due to safety reasons.
Owens signed a two-year contract with the Bears this offseason after one season with the Green Bay Packers. The 28-year-old previously played four seasons with the Houston Texans.
The Bears veteran will report for training camp on July 19. Chicago is attending the Hall of Fame Game against the Texans on August 1 in Canton, Ohio.
The U.S. women’s gymnastics team begins Olympic competition with qualifying rounds on July 28. The team final is on July 30. The women’s all-around final, where Biles is expected to be one of the favourites, is on August 1.

Speaking to reporters after winning the Olympic trials in Minnesota on Sunday, the gymnast shared that Chicago Bears players will be skipping part of training camp to attend the Olympic Games to support her.
“The Bears are actually giving him a few days off from training camp, so he’ll be there,” the Olympian said, according to People. “Yeah, just for a while.”
