Senator John Fetterman (D-Pa.) and his wife Giselle were hospitalized after a two-car crash in Maryland on Sunday.
According to a Maryland State Police spokesperson, Fetterman was driving a Chevrolet Traverse when he struck the rear of a Chevrolet Impala on Interstate-70 in Hancock.
The driver of the Impala was also taken to War Memorial Hospital in West Virginia, the department said in a statement to USA TODAY.
According to the department, no citations were issued and the investigation is ongoing.
A spokesperson for the senator said in a statement to USA TODAY that Fetterman was taken to the hospital out of an abundance of caution and treated for John’s shoulder injury. The office did not disclose Giselle’s injuries.
According to the spokesperson, the couple was discharged on Sunday afternoon and are doing fine.
Fetterman posted a video to his ex’s Twitter account on Monday, showing him and his wife at their home in Braddock, Pennsylvania.

John Fetterman was treated at the hospital for a shoulder injury following a car accident Sunday morning, according to a statement from his Senate office. He was discharged from the hospital on Sunday afternoon.
Fetterman, a Democrat, and his wife Gisele “were involved in a car accident with another driver,” the statement said, and both were evaluated at a local hospital and released within hours. The senator returned to his home in Braddock, Pennsylvania and is expected to return to the Senate for a vote this week.
Fetterman spokeswoman Carrie Adams said the senator was driving the car and the crash occurred on Interstate 70 in Maryland. The condition of the other driver is not clear.
Fetterman, 54, suffered a stroke in May 2022 while he was campaigning for his seat. As a result, he still has some trouble speaking fluidly and processing spoken conversations quickly, and he often uses devices in congressional hearings and routine conversations to transcribe spoken words in real time.
According to preliminary information from State Police, Fetterman, 54, was driving a Chevrolet Traverse westbound on I-70 when “for unknown reasons” his vehicle collided with the rear of a Chevrolet Impala.
Fetterman’s wife, Gisele Barreto Fetterman, was also in the vehicle, according to the senator’s office. According to his office, both were evaluated “out of an abundance of caution” at a local hospital and the senator was treated for a shoulder injury. Both were discharged on Sunday afternoon.
“He is doing well and is happy to be back in Braddock,” Fetterman’s office said in a statement.
The driver of the Impala was also taken via ambulance to a hospital in West Virginia for unknown injuries, according to state police.
“No citations were issued. The investigation into the crash remains active and ongoing,” Maryland State Police said in a statement.
Fetterman, D-Pa. was briefly hospitalized last year after being checked into an inpatient facility while suffering from depression.
