The Green Bay Packers gave a rookie a chance to be their kicker in 2023 and they’re going to give another rookie a chance this year.
The Packers have claimed Brayden Narveson, a rookie free agent who spent training camp with the Tennessee Titans, off waivers, making him part of their 53-man roster. In the same move, the Packers released veteran Greg Joseph.
The Packers retained Joseph and selected Anders Karlsson with the 2023 sixth-round pick on Tuesday.
“We rotated kickers around here for most of training camp,” general manager Brian Gutekunst said after the move was made Wednesday. “We monitor the league. And Braden was a kid we liked coming out (of college), and then he had an outstanding preseason at Tennessee.
“As soon as it came up, we thought we had a chance to get a really good young kicker and give him a chance.”
Narveson had a great preseason, making 6 of 7 field goals, including a 59-yarder, and making both of his extra points. The Titans stuck with veteran Nick Folk instead of going with undrafted Narveson.
Narveson’s only miss with the Titans was from 58 yards. He made field goals of 34, 21, 59, 46, 26 and 31 yards. The 46-yarder was the game-winner against Seattle with no timeouts.
The 5-11, 215-pound freshman played at Iowa State (2018-19), Western Kentucky (2020-22) and North Carolina State (2023).
He made 71 of 91 field goal attempts (78%) in college and made all 196 of his extra points.
This will be the second time in two years the Packers start the year with a rookie kicker. Gutekunst acknowledged that he was too quick to rein in the experts, as was the case with punters JK Scott, Corey Bojorquez and Carlson.
For coach Matt LaFleur, that means starting from a position that thwarted him in several clutch moments last year, the least of which was the divisional playoff game against San Francisco when Carlson missed a 41-yard field goal. While the Packers had scored 21 runs. -17 lead with 6 minutes, 18 seconds.

46-yarder winner no time left
The NFL’s roster cut deadline came and went at 3:00 pm Central time on Tuesday, when the Green Bay Packers reduced their roster from 90 to 53 players. Most of the players released by the Packers went into the NFL’s waiver system, allowing teams to acquire them in reverse order of the final standings from the previous season.
However, due to making the playoffs and winning the Wild Card Game, the Packers were ranked 25th in waiver priority. This means that if the Packers and another team (or teams) ahead of that spot lay claim to the same player, the team with the best priority will get that player.
We don’t know exactly how many players the Packers attempted to claim, but we do know the team acquired one player on waivers: kicker Braden Narveson.
The Tennessee Titans waived Narveson on Tuesday after an impressive performance in the preseason. A rookie who finished his college career at North Carolina State, Narveson has a big foot and ousted veteran Nick Folk for the Titans’ kicking job this summer. However, the 39-year-old Folk had led the NFL in field goal percentage a year earlier, missed only one attempt, and was generally believed to have worked throughout camp.
Narveson, who had a fairly respectable (by college kicking standards) 18-23 season last year for the Wolfpack and hit a 57-yarder, had a standout camp. He went 6-of-7 on field goal attempts, including a 3-3 performance in the second preseason game in which he made one attempt from 59 yards and drilled a 46-yard field goal to win the game. Additionally, Narveson’s only preseason miss came from 58 yards out, just short.
That preseason performance is why we mentioned Narveson as one of the top kickers to watch for in final cuts at Acme Packing Company. And although the Packers have not yet revealed which players will be released to make room for Nervson, let’s assume.
