Ilona Maher, a member of the United States women’s rugby team that unexpectedly won a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics, can now add Sports Illustrated swimsuit model to her list of accolades.
Maher posed with the medal for the cover of the outlet’s digital September issue.
“You know, I was always called manly or whatever,” Maher told SI. “But I never felt that way. But I don’t think you are going to threaten the girl who might get angry and beat you up. I love that [rugby] has shown me what I can do. It showed me what my body is capable of and that it’s not just a tool to look at and objectify.
Maher’s social media following has skyrocketed since the Olympics began and now has 2.3 million followers on TikTok.
Last month, she hit back at a troll on the forum who commented, “I bet that guy’s BMI is 30%.”
“Hello, thanks for this comment. I guess you were trying to roast me, but it’s actually a fact,’ Maher said in response. “My BMI is 30. To be precise, it is 29.3.
“I have been considered overweight my whole life. In middle school, elementary school, high school, I was always considered overweight.
He continued to say that traditional metrics would say he is overweight, but he has proof that he is a bona fide athlete.
“I’ve said it before, I’m 5-foot-10, 200 pounds, and I have about — and this is an estimate — about 170 pounds of lean mass on me. Do that math in your mind. You probably don’t. Could,” Maher continued in the video.
“It’s pretty crazy, isn’t it? And that BMI doesn’t really tell you what I can do; It doesn’t tell you what I do on the field; How fit am I? It’s just some numbers put together. It doesn’t tell you how much muscle I have, or anything like that. So yes, my BMI is 30. I am considered overweight.
“But alas, I’m going to the Olympics – and you’re not going.

Maher showed off her figure in several photos, including one photographed by Ben Watts on Fire Island, New York. Sexy bikini – and even posed topless with her bronze medal.
The rugby player first stunned in a brown bikini from Myra Swim, which featured an asymmetrical top and string bottoms. For glam, she wore dusky skin, manicured eyebrows and her signature pink lips. Maher kept her blonde hair open and styled her locks into beachy waves.
