Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet overturned the applecart by defeating a tough field to win the Olympic 5,000 meters gold medal at Paris 2024 on Monday (August 5).
Chebet used a devastating kick in the final round to defeat compatriot Faith Kipyegon with a winning time of 14 minutes, 28.56 seconds (14:28.56).
Kipyegon initially crossed the line in second place, but was disqualified for causing an obstruction following an incident between him and Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegaye with two laps remaining. Team Kenya will appeal the decision.
Tokyo 2020 champion Sifan Hasan finished second in 14:30.61, while Italy’s Nadia Battocelli was third in a national record of 14:31.64.
The race was billed as a battle of the three fastest women’s distance races in history, pitting defending champion Hassan, reigning world champion Kipyegon and world record holder Gudaf Tsegaye against each other.
Chebet delivered a well-measured run over 12 and a half laps before concluding with a sprint to the line against former world record-holder Kipyegon.
The two-time world medalist not only etched her name in the history books but also sank the trio’s hopes of adding 5,000m to their respective multiple gold medal efforts at these Games.
Chebet and Kipyegon were among the front runners with Tsegaye for most of the race, while Hassan bided his time at the back before moving forward through the field in the closing stages.
As the race entered the business end with two laps to go, there was a brief scuffle between Kipyegon and Tsegaye before they took the lead.
But Tsegaye’s race in front was short-lived as Kipyegon made his move to take the lead with Chebet by 500 metres. Chebet added Olympic gold to her silver and bronze at the World Championships by moving forward with the 50 metres.
