Shinnosuke Oka won the men’s all-around gymnastics title at the Paris Olympics on Wednesday, beating two main favorites to extend Japan’s dominance in the final.
The former junior world champion, whose career was halted by a serious knee injury two years ago, pipped both Zhang Boheng and Xiao Ruoteng of China to win his second gold medal in his first Olympics by just 0.233 points in three days.
“I didn’t make any mistakes in these Olympic Games,” Oka said. “I was a challenger, but I wanted to win.”
Oka’s teammate Daiki Hashimoto, the defending champion, fell during his pommel horse routine and finished sixth.
Despite Hashimoto’s struggles, it was another lovely evening for Japan, who made a remarkable last-minute turnaround in the team final on Monday to knock off China in the final rotation.
Hashimoto and Zhang have built an interesting rivalry over the past three years and were expected to be top contenders. Zhang was the world champion in the all-around in 2021, ahead of Hashimoto, who defeated Zhang to claim the world title the following year.
But it was Oka, who recently re-emerged on top, who grabbed the headlines and kept a cool head in the final rotation on the horizontal bar to lead Japan to its fourth consecutive Olympic all-around title.
Oka, who won the junior world title at age 15 but then tore his right ACL, took advantage of mistakes by the favorites.
She performed a solid pommel horse routine to take the lead after two rotations, then delivered an amazing vault. He was equally influential on the remaining two instruments, parallel bars and bars.
Zhang had dominated qualifying ahead of Oka and Hashimoto. This trio started in the group of leaders. Hashimoto came out of the blocks with an excellent floor routine that included clean passes and stuck landings. Zhang got off to a bad start, landing on his hands and knees and bouncing on the mat on his second pass.
He fell behind due to an unusual error, but then it was Hashimoto’s turn to stumble when he fell from the pommel horse after losing his balance. Hashimoto put his hands behind his head in frustration, completed his routine, then got a massage on the same right shoulder that had been bothering him during qualifying.
Zhang fought hard to the end and earned a score of 15.300 on parallel bars, bringing him back into contention. She finished her evening with a 14.633 on the horizontal bar, but it was too little, too late.
“I made some mistakes, but I managed to readjust on other instruments later and get back to my basics,” Zhang said. “I tried everything possible to keep up with other gymnasts. I didn’t win the gold medal, but losing is normal. it happens.”
The 22-year-old Hashimoto, who became the youngest man to win an Olympic all-around title in Tokyo, failed in his attempt to become only the fourth male gymnast to win a second all-around title. But he did not look too disappointed and joined in Oka’s celebration.
Oka said, “Daiki never stopped telling me that I should have confidence and that I should do my best from the beginning of the competition and that gave me confidence and strength.”
There were no athletes from powerhouse Russia due to the war in Ukraine.
The women’s all-around final will be held on Thursday. Simone Biles and her US teammate Suni Lee are set to become the first two Olympic all-around champions to face each other in the competition.
