Katerina married Russian billionaire Kirill Shamalov in 2013, although they are reportedly no longer together. According to Reuters, their wedding was a lavish ceremony at the Igora resort in St. Petersburg and included a laser show, an ice-skating display and a mock Russian village.

Keir Giles, a Russia expert at the Chatham House think tank and author of the book “Russia’s War on Everybody,” told CBS News that Putin’s facial expressions were characteristic of the Russian leader.
Giles said, “It’s not surprising that Putin said this with a smile on his face, that’s what he tends to do when engaging in the most blatant and open trolling of American audiences.” “This is an explosion of trolling, and he has done this before. At a meeting of the Election Threats Task Force, which included FBI Director Chris Wray and other top Justice Department officials, Attorney General Merrick Garland said that Russia Today, known as RT, a Russian state-funded media outlet, has implemented a plan. Funding the Tennessee-based company to create and disseminate material that was consistent with Russia’s goals of promoting division within American society and reducing support for Ukraine.
Garland said the Justice Department had seized 32 Internet domains that were used by pro-Russian actors and the Russian government in a “covert campaign to interfere in our nation’s elections and influence the results.”
“This is extremely serious and we will treat it accordingly,” Garland said.
According to documents produced by the Justice Department, one of the Russian campaigns, dubbed the “Good Old USA Project”, was aimed at lowering President Biden’s trust rating among Americans before he abandoned his re-election bid. The document appears to have been prepared in late 2023.
The campaign’s targets include “residents of conservative states where traditional values are strong who often vote for candidates from an unknown political party”. Despite being redacted, the document appears to refer to the Republican Party.
Another document about the Russian campaign, called the “U.S. Social Media Influencer Project”, described the Republican Party as “currently pursuing a relatively pro-Russian agenda” whose “enthusiasts [Republicans] ] can be exploited by posing as and propagating part of your agenda “This coincides with ours.”
In July, U.S. officials from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the FBI, and the Department of Homeland Security indicated that Russia was working to boost Trump’s candidacy this election cycle, as it did in 2016 and 2020, although they declined to comment. Putin also criticized former President and current Republican candidate Donald Trump for “imposing so many sanctions and sanctions against Russia as no president before him had ever imposed.”
Putin’s comments come on the heels of sweeping sanctions announced by the Biden administration to counter a Russian government-backed disinformation effort to influence the 2024 elections and boost Trump’s candidacy.
And despite Democrats’ vocal support of the Russian leader, U.S. Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said Wednesday that three Russian companies, at Putin’s direction, used fake profiles to promote false stories on social media. According to the FBI affidavit, internal documents produced by one of those Russian companies show that one goal of the propaganda effort was to support Trump’s candidacy or anyone who emerged as the Republican nominee for president.
