The Pacers shot the ball better than the Boston Celtics in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals. They dished out eight more assists than Boston and had 17 more bench points and a slightly higher offensive rebound percentage.
They had a five-point lead with less than two minutes left in the fourth quarter, and with 10 seconds remaining they had a three-point lead and possession of the ball. Despite all that, they fall 1-0 in the series after a 133-128 overtime loss at TD Garden on Tuesday.
“A lot of things went wrong for us and right for them,” Indiana coach Rick Carlisle told reporters. “They did. And so we have to take ownership of it. And we have to be ready for Thursday.”
Carlisle blamed himself for the outcome, specifically pointing to his decision not to call timeout with 10 seconds remaining in regulation. “This loss is entirely on me,” Carlisle said.
The Celtics admitted their mistake, and if they were not able to force a turnover on this inbounds play, they would have to have a Pacer at the free-throw line:
“We should have just taken a timeout, moved the ball and found a way to get it in and make one or two free throws and finish the game,” Carlisle said. “But that didn’t happen and we made some other mistakes.”

Haliburton’s girlfriend, Jade Jones, has been by his side every step of the way this season.
Haliburton and Jones have been together since 2019. The couple met at Iowa State University, where Haliburton was a basketball star and Jones was a member of the cheerleading team.
Haliburton has averaged 18.8 points, 8.1 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game so far this postseason. If the Pacers want any chance of pulling off an upset over the Celtics on Tuesday night they will need a big night from their star point guard.
According to his Instagram Story, Jones is in Boston to support Haliburton and the Pacers in Game 1.
Tuesday’s game will begin at 8 p.m. ET at Boston’s TD Garden.
