Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts broke his left hand after being hit by a pitch during the seventh inning of Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Royals.

The former MVP and seven-time All-Star was hit in the hand by Dan Altavilla’s 97.9 mph fastball and fell to the ground in extreme pain. Manager Dave Roberts did not know how much time Bates would miss, but said the injury would not require surgery.

Bates appeared in the clubhouse after the Dodgers’ 3–0 win with his left hand bandaged. He will meet with hand specialist Dr. Steven Shin on Monday.

“I think this is the first time I’ve had a hand injury so I wasn’t sure. I was numb and in pain,” Bates said, when asked if he knew immediately the arm was broken. “Unfortunately, it is broken. Now we can actually do (nothing).

“Just up and in. I stood by my word. Unfortunately, it hit my hand.”
Bates went 0 for 3 on Sunday, dropping his batting average to .304, which ranks ninth in the majors. He was fourth in on-base percentage (.405) and fifth in hits (86).

“This is a big blow. “I feel bad for Mookie because he’s having an MVP-type season,” Roberts said.
The pitch struck Bates on the top of his arm, and the trainers and Roberts quickly came out of the dugout to tend to him. Those watching on television and in the lower deck at Dodger Stadium could clearly hear the ball touch Bates’ hand.

“You would never want your people to be attacked. But their reaction made me think it was different,” Roberts said.

Altavilla told MLB.com that he was trying to go in but the fastball “slid into the hand” and had “absolutely no intent.”

“We’re trying to get Dan some innings and see how he can perform here. This is very unfortunate. I mean, I feel bad,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “Nobody wants to see that, especially a guy like Mookie.”

Miguel Rojas will take over as the Dodgers’ starting shortstop, with Kiké Hernández also getting time at the position.

Roberts said he would likely move Shohei Ohtani to the leadoff spot.

“It is very difficult to watch. He’s obviously a very important part of the team,” Ohtani said through an interpreter. “It’s really up to the rest of the team to pick him.”

Despite taking two of three from the Royals, it was a tough weekend for the Dodgers, who are 44-29 and hold an eight-game lead over San Diego in the NL West.

Right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto was placed on the 15-day injured list before the game due to a strained rotator cuff in his right shoulder.

“To be honest, we’ve been through this a lot and teams go through this all the time,” Roberts said. “That’s part of baseball. You have to move forward and people know you will get opportunities and play well.”

This will be Bates’ first stint on the injured list in two years. He missed almost three weeks in June 2022 due to a cracked right rib.

“Obviously, I’ll be watching the guys, cheering them on, but other than that, it’s just rest, maybe use it as a mental break, just be ready to go whenever it feels right,” Bates said.
