Kendrick Lamar will pop out on the NFL’s biggest stage next year: The Grammy winner will headline the Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show in New Orleans.
The NFL, Apple Music and Roc Nation announced Sunday that Lamar would lead the halftime festivities from the Caesars Superdome on Feb. 9. The rap megastar, who has won 17 Grammys, said he’s looking forward to bringing hip-hop to the NFL’s championship game, where he performed as a guest artist with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg in 2022.
“Rap music is still the most impactful genre to date,” Lamar said in a statement. “And I’ll be there to remind the world why. They got the right one.”
Lamar has experienced massive success since his debut album “good kid, m.A.A.d city” in 2012. Since then, he’s accumulated 17 Grammy wins and became the first non-classical, non-jazz musician to win a Pulitzer Prize for his 2017 album “DAMN.”
The rapper’s latest album “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers,” was released in 2022. He was featured on the song “Like That” with Future and Metro Boomin on a track that spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 this year. He also garnered another hit with “Not Like Us.”
Roc Nation founder Jay-Z called Lamar a “once-in-a-generation” artist and performer.
“His deep love for hip-hop and culture informs his artistic vision,” Jay-Z said. “He has an unparalleled ability to define and influence culture globally. Kendrick’s work transcends music, and his impact will be felt for years to come.”
Roc Nation and Emmy-winning producer Jesse Collins will serve as co-executive producers of the halftime show. The creative direction of Lamar’s performance will be provided by pgLang.
Wife
Lamar and Alford met as students of Centennial High School in their hometown of Compton, California, in southern Los Angeles. They were friends first before they became a couple, and have been together ever since.
“Everybody that’s been around me has been around since Day 1 and I can’t change that. I don’t change for nobody,” Lamar said in an interview on Power 105.1. “People that have been by your side — you’re supposed to honor that.”
In April 2022, Lamar announced that he’d be releasing his long-awaited fifth album after a five-year music hiatus. Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers dropped the following month and fans were surprised to see a rare glimpse into the rapper’s personal life via the album cover.
Lamar unveiled the cover on Instagram on May 11, which features him and Alford as well as their toddler daughter, who was reportedly born in July 2019. Neither Lamar nor Alford have spoken publicly about her arrival or revealed the child’s name.
The cover art also shows Alford holding an infant, seemingly confirming that the couple had welcomed another child. While they have not spoken about the second child publicly either, Alford posted a family photo for Father’s Day 2022 honoring the men in her life.
“I choose to celebrate them for stepping up instead of stepping out, for providing, for assisting us women, for healing, for showing up physically and most importantly for showing up emotionally,” she wrote, concluding her heartfelt caption with, “Happy Father’s Day @kendricklamar.”
The Compton-born rapper
The National Football League and Apple Music announced Sunday that rapper Kendrick Lamar will lead the Super Bowl half-time show.
This will be the second time the Grammy and Pulitzer Prize-winning artist will perform at one of music’s most prestigious events — but it will be the first time he’ll be the headliner.
“Rap music is still the most influential genre today. And I’ll be there to remind the world why that is,” Lamar said in a statement. “They got it right.”
The Super Bowl will be held on February 9 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Lamar performed with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem and Mary J. Blige at the 2022 Super Bowl show.
The show earned an Emmy Award for the Outstanding Variety Special (Live) category.
The 37-year-old Compton-born rapper is known as one of the most inventive lyricists in the hip-hop genre. In 2018, he became the first hip-hop artist to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music.
“Time and again, Kendrick has proven his unique ability to craft moments that resonate, redefine and ultimately shake the foundations of hip-hop,” NFL head of music Seth Dudowski said in a statement. “
Lamar made headlines this year due to his public feud with Canadian rapper Drake, with the two stars releasing a series of diss tracks earlier this year.
Two tracks with Lamar’s contributions became major hits, including Future and Metro Boomin’s “Like That” and Lamar’s own “Not Like Us.”
Other major artists to perform at the sporting event include artists such as Rihanna, Usher, Beyoncé, The Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen.
The Super Bowl is the largest sporting event in the US, attracting millions of viewers, as well as being broadcast around the world.
