The biopic, titled A Complete Unknown, has been given a December release date for the US – prime time for contention for next year’s Oscars.
The film begins with Chalamet’s Dylan arriving in New York’s Greenwich Village in 1961 with acoustic guitar in hand and $12 in his pocket, and ends with him controversially “going electric” four years later.
In the trailer, Chalamet is seen performing the 1963 classic A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall with Dylan’s signature tousled hair.
Director James Mangold – who also made the 2005 Oscar-winning Johnny Cash biopic ‘Walk the Line’ – said the actor was “so brave that he made himself vulnerable by throwing himself into this job.”
His singing was generally well received on social media.
One user on X wrote, “Timmy is doing his own singing and pushing it. Color has impressed me.
“Did Timothy sing the songs himself? If so incredible, it sounds just like Dylan. Wow,” said another.
However, some people were less impressed. “That’s not singing,” one wrote.
Mangold told Rolling Stone that the actors did their own singing – with the provision that he could fix anything necessary in post-production.
“You want everyone to put everything on the line, every moment,” he said. “But it’s not [as] if one of our actors hits a bad note, I have no alternative option or ability to change that one beat.
“If Timmy is brave enough to stand there and make himself vulnerable, throw himself into this, then I should be brave enough to stand behind the camera and shoot.
“And Timmy was a partner in it. He really wanted it. And we had years of preparation for this movie because because of the false start with COVID and other things, Timmy really had a kind of There was incubation that took years to happen.”

A Complete Unknown
A Complete Unknown follows Dylan’s rise to fame as an artist who revolutionized American music with his personal and poetic folk-rock songs.
Mangold said he was attracted to “this idea of a genius like Bob, who was so annoying, so provocative, so full of fantasy and fact”.
He said, “The idea of this incredible, artistic character landing in New York with $12 in his pocket – trying to thread the needle of how a person gets from there to there is very interesting to me.”
The director received the blessing of the real Dylan, who is listed as executive producer.
Chalamet has already starred in two of last year’s biggest movies – Wonka and Dune: Part Two.
The 28-year-old may now be in contention for his second Oscar nomination, after being nominated for his breakthrough film, Call Me By Your Name in 2018.
The cast of A Complete Unknown also includes Edward Norton as folklorist Pete Seeger and Monica Barbero as singer Joan Baez.
Dylan was previously played by Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Richard Gere, Heath Ledger, Ben Whishaw, and Marcus Carl Franklin in the 2007 film I’m Not There.
Children
During his long and Grammy Award-winning career, Bob Dylan had six children. The “Hurricane” singer has five children – Mariah, Jessie, Anna, Sam and Jacob – with his ex-wife Sarah Lownds and a daughter, Desiree, with his ex-wife Carolyn Dennis.
Now
Timothée Chalamet is Bob Dylan!
On Wednesday, July 24, Searchlight Pictures released the first trailer for his upcoming film A Complete Unknown, in which Chalamet, 28, plays iconic folk and rock musician Dylan. The film covers Dylan’s early years in New York City and his initial rise to fame in the 1960s.
The trailer finds Edward Norton as musician Pete Seeger as he introduces audiences to a young Dylan, portrayed by the 28-year-old Oscar nominee – before Dylan sings “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall”. Came on stage to perform.
As Chalamet stars as Dylan, the film cuts to the musician’s performance, travels around New York City and gives the first glimpse of co-stars Elle Fanning and Monica Barbero, the latter of whom plays Dylan. Played by girlfriend Joan Baez.
The trailer ends with Dylan performing a song for Seeger and his family, with one of Seeger’s daughters amusingly telling the soon-to-be-famous musician that his song is a “good start”.
“Based on the influential New York music scene of the early ’60s, A Complete Unknown is the story of 19-year-old Minnesota musician Bob Dylan’s rise to the top of concert halls and charts as a folk singer – making his songs and secrets popular around the world. They became a sensation – culminating in their unprecedented electric rock and roll performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965,” reads an official synopsis for the film.
Chalamet was first seen on the New York City set of A Complete Unknown for filming in March and was later spotted performing with 34-year-old Barbero in a musical at Echo Lake Park in New Jersey in April. That same month, he was also seen hanging out with 26-year-old Fanning on set.
Chalamet did significant research to play the folk music legend; In January, he visited Dylan’s high school in Hibbing, Minnesota and spent time with the school’s drama students while in Dylan’s hometown.
