Allyson Felix, the most decorated track and field athlete in history, understands the challenges athlete moms face. The retired runner and mother of two is advocating for Olympic moms and is leveraging her experience to better support them during the upcoming Paris Olympics.
Felix, who has a record 20 World Championship medals and 11 Olympic medals, including seven gold, has teamed up with Pampers to create the first Pampers Nursery in the Athletes Village at the Paris Olympics. This nursery will provide Olympic mothers with a space to connect, care for and play with their children, helping to relieve some of the pressures of competition.
“I just knew how hard it was to compete at the top level after my daughter was born, and some of the practical things were really hard. And so when I joined the IOC’s Athletes Commission, I was really looking forward to helping athlete moms.” “I wanted to be a voice for them, and give them one less thing to worry about under the pressure of competition,” said Felix.
The Pampers Nursery will be located in the center of the Athletes Village Plaza, where athletes stay during the Games. It will be a place where athletes can get away and spend personal time with their children, Felix said.
“I think it really tells women that you can choose motherhood and still be at the top of your game and not miss a beat,” Felix said.
Grant from Melinda French Gates
Felix also shared his excitement about a $20 million grant from Melinda French Gates to support Black maternal health. Upon learning of the grant, Felix said she was initially surprised and very humbled, especially after hearing that French Gates was following her advocacy efforts.
“I’m very grateful to have received it and I’m excited to put the money to good use,” Felix said.
A new role in the Olympics
Felix will participate in the Paris Olympics, but in a new capacity. She says she feels mixed emotions as she prepares for her first Olympics without competing in two decades.

“This is my first time coming to the Games as a spectator and I’m really enjoying it,” she said.
One of her favorite parts of the Paris Olympics, she said, is watching world-class athletes compete with her 4-year-old daughter.
“I went to watch Simone (Biles) win another gold medal on vault in gymnastics. That was great. I had my daughter with me,” the Olympian said.
Felix may have stepped away from competing at the Olympics, but she has been an athlete representative to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for two years as an appointed member.
The mother of two young children played a key role in building a nursery inside the Paris Olympic Village, and now she is running to become a member of the IO Athletes Commission with the full support of the Team USA Athletes Commission.
“I was appointed to that (athlete representative) position, and because of that I was able to get a family spot in the nursery,” Felix said. “I think spending time in that situation showed me that change is possible. Now that my term is over, I am excited to contest the elections and hopefully continue to do some of the work I am passionate about.”
If she wins the election, the Crenshaw native will do more work for the IOC as the city of Los Angeles prepares to host the 2028 Summer Olympics.
“I’m excited that I’ll be there with my family and we can all share in the special magic of the Olympic Games.”
