Veronica Fraley is scheduled to compete in the Paris Olympics for the first time on Friday.
So now is probably not a good time for distractions — like, let’s say, the house rent in Nashville is due and there’s no money to cover it.
Luckily, hip-hop pioneer Flavor Flav, billionaire Alexis Ohanian and others have covered Fraley.
Fraley was a sophomore undergraduate student at Vanderbilt University when she won the NCAA discus championship in June in Eugene, Oregon, setting a school record with a throw of 208 feet and 10 inches. Several weeks later he earned a spot on the US national team at the Olympic trials.
But a day before her Olympic debut, Fraley had something else on her mind.
“I’ll be attending the Olympic Games tomorrow and can’t even pay my rent,” Fraley wrote on X on Thursday. My school only paid about 75% of my rent, unlike what they pay football players (who haven’t won anything). “Enough to buy a new car and a house.”
Fraley clarified in a subsequent ” are in favor of. Display. That is all I am saying.”
Flav is in Paris as the official publicity person for the American water polo teams. He has also promised to help the women’s water polo team financially. But apparently the Public Enemy co-founder’s support isn’t limited to just one game. He saw Fraley’s initial post and offered help.
Flav replied, “I got it.” “DM me and I’ll send payment today so you don’t have to worry about it tomorrow, and I’ve been supporting you since tomorrow, let’s go!!!”
Reddit co-founder Ohanian, who is married to tennis great and four-time Olympic gold medalist Serena Williams, also commented on Fraley’s post, offering to split Fraley’s rent with Flav.

But Ohanian did much more than that. He shared a screenshot showing that he had transferred $7,760 to Fraley, an amount he chose as a nod to his technology firm Seven Seven Six.
Fraley also set up an online fundraiser “to support my track and field journey to begin my professional athletic career and continue representing Team USA!”
Later, Flav posted on X that Fraley would not have to worry about making rent for the next several months.
“This [is] the power of community,” he wrote. “My girl @vmfraley’s tweet got 7000 views, only 41 people ‘liked’ it, only 5 commented, only 1 tagged me and @alexisohanian. Now that tweet has 10 million views Yes, his year’s rent has been paid, and the people have got it back!”
Ohanian said: “Now she can focus on getting that hardware!”
That’s what Fraley intends to do.
“This makes all the difference in the world,” he wrote in a post to Ohanian and Flav.
Pay her rent
Olympic athletes may be global superstars, but their training, travel and education can be expensive. And when an athlete tweeted about needing money, two famous faces came forward to help. Team USA discussed how thrower Veronica Fraley posted the day before the Paris Olympics that she couldn’t make rent — and Flavor Flav and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian both replied.
Fraley said his school, Vanderbilt University, paid about 75% of the rent for him, adding that football players at his school are paid enough to buy new cars and homes. Because of this discrepancy, the Olympian and 2024 NCAA discus titleholder needed help.

Rapper and media personality Flava Flav replied to him: “I understand,,, DM me and I will send payment today so you don’t have to worry about it tomorrow,,, and I will support you tomorrow, let’s go, !!”
It also inspired Alexis Ohanian, who is married to tennis superstar Serena Williams, to offer his services. He wrote, “Come on now! I’ll split it with @flavorfav.” He then shared a screenshot of a Venmo transaction of $7,760 to Fraley. Note on transaction: ‘Murica.
While this rent may be too high for many, Forbes estimated in 2019 that Ohanian, an entrepreneur and investor, had a net worth of $70 million. And Flavor Flav, who is the official promotion person for the USA men’s and women’s water polo team, has an estimated net worth of $2 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth.
In 2021, the NCAA changed its rules to allow college athletes to earn money in sponsorships and in 2024, amended the rules to allow schools to pay student athletes.
But for many, competing at a high level and traveling to Paris for the Olympics is expensive. Before the Olympics, Flavor Flav, whose real name is William Jonathan Drayton Jr., was announced as a sponsor, providing financial support for the Team USA women’s water polo team heading to the Games.
In addition to his financial contributions, the rapper’s five-year deal with the team has led to him appearing at events and creating social media content with the team. He has been seen extensively pushing for women in the Olympic Games. The first medal event of the games will be held on August 10.
“It is an honor to support the USA Water Polo teams,” Flavor Flav said in a news release. “As a father of a girl and a champion of all sports, I’m excited to bring my energy and voice to this incredible sport. Elite sports don’t often get the spotlight they deserve, but they’re full of incredible talent and heart.” Together, we’re going to make some serious waves!”
Flavor Flav has eight children, six of whom are girls. Ohanian is also “girl dad” to Alexis Olympia and Adira Rivers, who he shares with Williams – herself a four-time Olympic gold medalist.
Fraley, who also created a GoFundMe to help him pursue his athletic dreams, praised the pair, tweeting: “Thank you

Olympic glory is thrilling, but it doesn’t always pay the bills.
Team USA discus thrower Veronica Fraley shared this earlier this week, when she told her followers on Instagram that she was struggling to make ends meet.
“I will be competing in the Olympic Games tomorrow and can’t even pay my rent,” she wrote on the X, punctuating it with an incredulous expression emoji.
Enter Flavor Flav, the “hype man” of American water polo teams, and Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian. The people who had been cheering on Team USA at the Paris Olympics all week came together to not only pay Fraley’s rent for the month, but his rent for the rest of 2024.

“I’m happy to help those who are representing the best of us all,” Flew said in a statement to CNN. “That’s why I’m in Paris. I’m trying to bring awareness to some of the difficulties Olympians experience. They are doing two to three jobs here just to make ends meet.”
Fraley, a first-time Olympian and graduate student at Vanderbilt University, shared her financial troubles on Thursday, a day before her qualifying event.
“My school only paid about 75% of my rent, compared to what they pay football players…enough to buy new cars and houses,” he wrote on “Nothing is won.” (Last season, the team won two games and lost 10. Vanderbilt doesn’t make zero of its athletes’ earnings — or name, image and likeness — through public deals, but a CBS Sports analysis from May showed that top colleges Football players can earn hundreds of thousands of dollars every year.)
Flav found Fraley’s post and pledged his support.
“I guchoo,” he wrote. “DM me and I’ll send payment today so you don’t have to worry about it tomorrow.”
A representative for Flav confirmed to CNN that the public.
