At the end of a grueling three-hour pole vault competition in sunny Budapest last August, America’s Katie Moon and Australia’s Nina Kennedy made a snap decision that drew a surprisingly harsh reaction.

Tired and emotionally exhausted, they decided to share the World Championship gold instead of competing to decide the winner outright.
“Coming back healthy and with a gold medal, while celebrating with my friend who had jumped the same way, was a reckless move,” Moon wrote on Instagram in defense of that decision. “One of the reasons we reach our highest levels is to listen to our bodies and know our limits. We decided that in this special moment, sharing the glory is just as good as earning it outright.
Nearly a year later, Kennedy and Moon returned to the international stage on Wednesday night for the Olympic women’s pole vault final. They suitably arrived in Paris as co-favorites to win the gold medal, with the 27-year-old Kennedy clearing the highest bar of any pole vaulter this year and Moon returning to form after early-season injuries.

By the end of Wednesday night’s competition, Moon and Kennedy were again locked in a one-on-one battle as the field fell one by one. Kennedy was the first to clear 4.90 and set the bar for gold. After a long wait for the men’s 400 to be completed, Moon clipped the bar on his first attempt at 4.90, sprinted on his second attempt, and clipped the bar on his third attempt.

And so this time, there was a clear winner in the women’s pole vault final, with Kennedy taking gold and Moon taking silver. Canada’s Elisha Newman won the bronze medal.

Husband

The world champion arrives at the 2024 Olympics with an impressive record: she won gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the 2022 World Athletics Championships and the 2023 World Athletics Championships, where she shared the top prize with Australia’s Nina Kennedy.

Her husband is known for wearing – what Katie calls ‘super flattering T-shirts’ – that feature funny pictures of the athlete’s face.
‘We have a very funny relationship, he had my most obnoxious face on his T-shirt, big and bold,’ Katie told reporters, according to NBC. ‘So, if you see it in Paris… you haven’t,’ she joked.

The athlete wrote on Instagram, ‘It will be very difficult to beat this year.’

She added, ‘Hugo Moon, I love you more than anything and I can’t wait to be your Stage 5 clinger for the rest of my life.’

Katie shared several sweet photos with her boyfriend ahead of their big day, including a series of photos from their engagement shoot.
‘For this he had to leave his T-shirt at home. She wrote in the caption of one post, ‘Can’t wait to marry this man in 154 days.’

The couple tied the knot on December 31, 2022, in front of their family and friends.

‘Happy Anniversary Mr. Moon! Thank you for being the best part of this and every year, the pole vaulter wrote on his first wedding anniversary.
‘Life Update: We Bought a House! Hugo took a job as the women’s assistant rowing coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Tulsa,” Katie revealed on Instagram at the time.

She noted that she is ‘still primarily in Atlanta for training’ but ‘splits [her] time between the two locations.’
