At Tree Turner Bobblehead Night, he tossed the baseball repeatedly in a series of charged errors, mental lapses and unforced errors.
He was in the holiday spirit at the annual Christmas-themed night in July, and gave up at least four extra outs against the Guardians. Twice starter Christopher Sanchez singled out a runner but did not put out, once due to a bad throw of his own. Both of those runners scored and another misfire in the fourth stretched the inning long enough for Cleveland to tack on an insurance run to beat the suddenly flailing Phillies 3–1, much to the dissatisfaction of the sellout crowd of 44,448.

It didn’t take long for what became a pattern to emerge. Cleveland’s second batter, right fielder Angel Martínez, reached on an infield hit. When he tried to steal second, Sanchez threw behind him, trapping the runner between first and second. But when first baseman Bryce Harper threw back to second, Bryson Stotts was in front of the base and shortstop Trey Turner was behind him, allowing the runner to reach the stolen base.
Thomson said Harper probably should have thrown to Stotts at first, but when Martínez stopped he caught the ball and then broke for second. At that time, Turner should have been on base, but he was not.
Errors by Turner in the second and Sanchez in the third didn’t come back to bite.
