Drowning

A CrossFit Games athlete died after drowning in a Fort Worth lake on Thursday, the first day of competition in the multi-day event, officials said.

At a press conference, CrossFit officials confirmed that a CrossFit athlete drowned in the swimming portion of the first event of the CrossFit Games. The event was held at Marine Creek Lake near the Tarrant County College Northwest campus.

According to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office, the victim was identified as Lazar Dukic, 28, of Serbia. Dukic was pronounced dead at 10:24 a.m., according to medical examiner records.

A cause of death was not initially listed Thursday afternoon.

The remaining CrossFit Games events were canceled for Thursday. CrossFit CEO Don Fall said at a news conference that officials have not decided whether they will cancel the remaining Games, which are scheduled to take place over the weekend.

“CrossFit is deeply saddened by the death of one of our athletes in the swimming portion of our program this morning… We are cooperating, we are working closely with authorities with the follow-up investigation,” Fall said.

Cole Learn, a CrossFit athlete from Ontario, Canada, was found drowning near a lake Thursday morning.
“Absolutely devastated, not sure what to think and almost in denial,” Learned said.

Learn said he witnessed the moments before the athlete went underwater during a swimming event.
“I saw him start struggling, he started making little turns and he was trying to get his head out of the water,” Learned said. “That’s when we started yelling to the lifeguard, he needed help and within seconds he fell down, never to come back up.”

There was a security plan in place for the CrossFit Games, Fall said, and security personnel were present at the event. Fall said Thursday that all details of the incident and how the drowning unfolded will be part of a review with law enforcement.
“I think the CrossFit community needs to lean on each other right now,” Learn!

Missing

The Fort Worth Fire Department was notified of the drowning around 8 a.m. Video from the scene shows Fort Worth Fire Rescue pulling a body out of the water and placing it in a bag around 10 a.m.

“I know many of you have questions about who he was today… This information will not be released until the Tarrant County Medical Examiner has been able to speak to the family and verify the athlete’s name and identity. Don’t get a chance to,” said Leah Wagner, spokeswoman for the Fort Worth Police Department.

According to the event program, the location where the incident occurred was the site of a run-swim event at the CrossFit Games. The run-swim was free for spectators to watch and was miles from the main competition venue at Dickies Arena.

“There are a lot of people in the community who are hurting right now, they’re really sad,” said Fall, who knew the athlete well, who loved and respected this man and a lot of people are grieving. Have been.”

Samantha Brown, who came from North Carolina to watch the CrossFit Games, said the CrossFit community is close, and a drowning at one of their events was shocking.

“It’s terrifying, especially because it’s not something we would ever expect or imagine to happen,” Brown said. “We’re all athletes here and something like this is heartbreaking.”
